Literary criticism can be a useful tool for any writer. Literary criticism is primarily used during the revision of someone’s work. Throughout this process someone other than the writer will typically analyze the work and determine the strong and or weak points of ones work. This can be used to strengthen the work that is being analyzed by seeing possible errors or through seeing it in a different light, for example possibly seeing the topic from someone else’s perspective might strengthen your view or possibly even change your mind on the topic.
Although some may frown upon the attitude of literary criticism; some may see it as a negative view upon ones work, but it should be looked upon as a positive tool to use in writing. What some people tend to neglect is to truly take a step back and fully analyze their work, with whatever tools possible, especially because it may change your attitude towards your own work and cause you to want to change it for various reasons and in the long run better your own writing. One must remember though that this is simply a tool you can use and that this is simply advice and commentary on your work. In the end it is up to you to use your own discretion in whether or not you will use the advice and suggestions given to you and actually apply it to your work.
